Because modern modems often have a built-in router, the distinction between the two types of equipment is often blurred. But those who remember the early days of the Internet know that their functions are not the same.
What do routers do?
A router connects to a modem and creates a private network in your home, office or cafe, for example. When you connect the device to Wi-Fi, it connects to a local router. It networks smart devices, including smartphones, smart home systems, security webcams, and so on. Wireless routers also distribute Internet to TVs, laptops and personal computers, and stream content through video services.
What do modems do?
A modem’s job is to connect your ISP’s Internet source to your home network, taking into account the type of connection delivery: cable, fiber optic, satellite, xDSL or phone line. Each of these requires a suitable modem, which is connected to your router or directly to your computer with an Ethernet cable.
Modern modems with a router function
Such modems are equipped with built-in routers and perform both functions in one device. They can also include VoIP functionality if you have cable, internet and phone. Typically, these combination devices are not economically feasible for offices and businesses: when one part fails, it will be more expensive to replace and downtime will increase due to the associated setups. Nevertheless, if you need the easiest router and network setup, buying a combination modem and router is handy.
A router for a seamless Mesh system
In some cases, a single wireless router isn’t enough to cover an entire home or office because of a huge space or a complicated layout with multiple floors or thick walls. Conventional repeaters and range extenders (like those on Aliexpress) reduce overall bandwidth and reduce the speed of data exchange within the network. In such a situation, it makes sense to invest in a meshed, seamless Wi-Fi Mesh network. It consists of a single primary router and several nodes that carry the wireless signal from one to the other like a chain with no loss in link quality.
